BAYOU BEAT: This was the debut for Texas and Louisiana Music Halls of Fame bandleader Doug Ardoin, Sr.’s new band. Ardoin, Sr. and his sons, Doug Jr. and Richard – both veteran musicians – all sang well and swapped out on lead and bass guitars. Lead guitar solos by all were outstanding. Drummer Matt Meeks, a former band-mate of R. Ardoin, kept solid time. Doug, Sr. opened with Johnny B. Goode and brought down the house. He also did “Sugar Mamma” and “Sweet little Angel,” the BB King classic. Doug Jr. sang and played lead on first-rate versions of “Shame, Shame” and “Nobody Loves Me Like My Baby.” Playing lead and singing, Richard did KO renditions of “Killing Floor” and “The Sky Is Crying.” Doug, Sr. closed with a “Gatemouth” Brown’s great, classic instrumental, “Okie Dokie Stomp.” He nailed it, and Meeks did exceptional drum work on that tune. Wow!
